How to Do Motion Design with GPT-6 Astra and After Effects
You can now build real Adobe After Effects motion graphics without knowing a thing about After Effects. GPT-6 Astra drives After Effects directly from Codex using the free, open-source Higgsfield Motion Designer plugin — I've never opened After Effects in my life, and it built every animation in my latest video without me touching a single button. Here's exactly how to set it up and the prompts that actually get you a usable result.
This is a genuine shift. Using After Effects used to require real expertise and a lot of hours. Now the model reads your intent, writes the scripts, and runs the software for you while you stay in the director's chair.
What Is GPT-6 Astra's After Effects Integration?
GPT-6 Astra is a big leap for motion design because it can control After Effects from inside Codex. It does this through the Higgsfield Motion Designer plugin — a free, open-source bridge that connects the model to After Effects. It does not burn any Higgsfield credits. You install it once, and from then on Astra can operate the app on your behalf.
The plugin does two things at once. First, it acts as the bridge between GPT-6 and After Effects, using a combination of scripts and computer use to actually manipulate the software. Second, it ships with a set of skills that teach the model how to prompt and use After Effects well — so you're not relying on the model to guess its way through a professional tool it's never touched.
The same approach extends to other creative software like Blender. Combine these tools and you can act as a motion designer even with zero experience in any of them.
What Do You Need to Get Started?
Three things, and that's it:

Setup is fast. Go to the plugin link, click the install button, and you're done. To use it, you either invoke it directly with higgsfield/use after effects inside Codex, or you just say in plain language: "I want to use the Higgsfield After Effects plugin skill to do all this." From there, Astra handles the rest.
If you'd rather run this inside something like Claude Code instead of Codex, the workflow still holds — you'd just bring in image generation through the Higgsfield MCP for the storyboard step below.
Step 1: Storyboard Before You Build Anything
The single biggest mistake is jumping straight into a prompt and expecting a finished video. Don't do that. The first thing you do is storyboard.
Instead of firing a prompt at Astra and hoping it produces something you like, have it create a storyboard first so you can see visually what it's planning. This gets you and the model on the same page before a single frame gets rendered. When I built my whiteboard animation, the storyboard showed me the core elements up front — and several of them made it straight into the final production.
The reason this matters so much comes down to time. Rendering a 15-20 second motion graphic can take 10, 15, even 20 minutes. The last thing you want is to get stuck in a prompt loop — tweak, render, wait, repeat — for hours. Every minute you spend aligning on the front end saves you a full render cycle on the back end.
Astra is well suited to this because it has built-in image generation, so it can produce the storyboard itself. And here's a useful detail: the reference GitHub repo for the video includes a storyboard template, plus templates for the build itself and for revisions.
Use Reference Videos to Steal Motion
You can hand Astra a reference video and have it pull motion design elements into your creation. My whiteboard animation was basically modeled on a clip the head designer at Higgsfield posted on Twitter. I gave Astra the post, it took a look at the video, grabbed the appropriate screenshots, and used that to guide its own build.
It won't be a one-for-one copy — but it'll get you moving in the right direction. If you find clips out there with effects you want, dropping them in as reference is one of the best ways to get there.
Step 2: Let Codex Write the Prompt, Then Build
Step two is where you finally give Codex a real prompt — except you don't have to write it yourself. Have Codex create the prompt for you.
A good prompt here is fairly detailed. For the whiteboard video, mine opened with a clear directive — something like "I want a 12-second whiteboard animation in Adobe After Effects using the installed Higgsfield After Effects integration" — then pointed at the reference files, then broke the animation down into beats.
Beats are the individual scenes you want to see, and they should come straight from your storyboard. That's the whole point of storyboarding: it's not just for figuring out the theme, it's the source you pull from to write the prompt. Codex handles that translation automatically.
The hard part is describing the motion itself. If you're not a motion designer, how do you know what to ask for? Two ways:
- Reference videos. Drop them into Codex and say "bring that into our prompt."
- Put Codex to work on research. Tell it to go find best practices for After Effects and build you a file cataloging the different types of motion graphics available. When you're not a motion designer, what kills you is not knowing what you don't know — so have Codex build you a library of motion design effects to pull from.
When in doubt, point it at the reference GitHub repo, have it read the prompts and prompt templates, and let it fill one out based on your storyboard.
Then you just tell Codex to start building. For a 15-second video, the build took 22 minutes and 56 seconds — and again, it cost zero Higgsfield credits. Using the plugin, Codex checks its own work against the storyboard, kicks off the render on its own, checks the final render, and then presents the finished video right inside Codex. It even links you to the project and hands over all the assets. Completely hands-off.
Step 3: Edit With Prompts, Not Panels
Once Astra has produced the motion graphics, you move to editing. If you actually know After Effects, go do your thing directly in the app. But just like steps one and two, you're only a prompt away from any edit you want to make.
And this isn't limited to the visuals. You can prompt changes to the graphics, but also to the audio — the sound design and the background music. For all the videos in this workflow, I usually landed on a final in about two or three total iterations.
One thing to watch: if you don't stay on top of transitions and pacing, the model tends to linger. It likes to sit on scenes for 2.5 to 3 seconds, which drags. A snappy result needs you to explicitly call out the timing between beats. When you write edit prompts, be very specific about when and what you're actually changing.
Two cautions from experience:
- Avoid building an auto-loop for these edits. The renders take real time, and looping wastes it.
- Keep a human in the loop. Don't treat the storyboard as a guiding reference the model can silently iterate against on its own. Creative work with AI still needs you hands-on — this is a director's tool, not an autonomous one.
Why This Matters for AI Motion Design
We simply haven't been able to do this before. Yes, we had Remotion, and yes, we had HyperFrames — but this is different. After Effects is a professional tool that demanded serious expertise and time. Now, through these AI tools, people with no motion design background can actually play in the space. And it's only going to get better.
